African Union to promote Africa's renaissance from cultural roots

Addis Ababa, Feb 8 (Prensa Latina) We owe to the cultural heritage what we currently are and, from that wealth, we will build a renaissance of Africa, said Felix Tshisekedi, president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and new chairperson of the African Union (AU).

This way, Tshisekedi summarized the purposes of his leadership of the 34th AU Summit, held virtually last weekend, at which the response to Covid-19 and armed conflicts were some of the issues on debate.

Under the presidency of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Assembly of the African Union for the 2021-2022 period will be made up of Senegal, Comoros and Egypt as first, second and third vice-presidents, respectively, and South Africa as a rapporteur.

In the arts, traditions, knowledge, religions and languages practiced by each people, there is a vast universe we will protect and transmit to our children, Tshisekedi said in the speech of the rotating chairmanship of the organization.

We have, he added, a culture that distinguishes us in the world and we have to use it as a lever to promote development, to turn it into a support for the recovery of all countries.

Africa faces great challenges that need African solutions, they urge to combine efforts and demand immediate collective actions, with respect for the plurality and independence of each state, from the cultural roots, he said.

Geopolitical tensions, the implementation of reforms in the organization -included financial autonomy-, the promotion of gender equality, the fight against terrorism and the confrontation of the consequences of climate change, are other of his many challenges.
