The 10th Afide 2023 International Convention was inaugurated today in Havana with a keynote speech by the president of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (Inder), Osvaldo Vento Montiller.

The also Master of Science and president of the organizing committee spoke about the importance of sustainable sports and the role of human development in the Cuban population, before an audience gathered at the Convention Palace composed of delegates from more than 20 nations.

“We responsibly assume the concept of sustainable development in the field of sports to achieve an increase in the levels of health, leisure and physical capacity,” the top leader of the governing body of sports in Cuba said.

The Tunisian Minister of Sports, Mr. Kamel Deguiche, the Venezuelan Vice-Minister of Sports Massification, José Luis Tobar Guzmán, and the Director General of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Istvan Igloi-Nagy, had the opportunity to address the audience.

At the opening of the event, which for the first time will have a hybrid format (on-site and online), a cultural gala impregnated with Cuban culture was enjoyed, where traditional music, the “décima” and sports were mixed on stage.

The president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, sent an online message to those present before giving way to the plenary sessions scheduled for the first day of the conclave, which will last until Thursday, November 30.

I have seen with my own eyes the passion there is in Cuba for sports and this is one of the reasons for its sporting successes, said the executive.

Behind every athlete there is a national support network made up of coaches and scientists who make those results possible, he added, and thanked the president of the Cuban Olympic Committee, Roberto León Richards, who was present in the room.
