The digitalization, an 18-month project titled, "Sharing 'Gabo' with the world", will be carried out with the help of a grant worth $126,706 from the Washington-based nonprofit, Council on Library and Information Resources.

The project is aimed at making the Colombian novelist's legacy - 24,000 pages in documents including manuscripts, notebooks, photographs, scripts and letters, currently stored in 78 boxes at the Harry Ransom Center in Austin - accessible across the globe by the end of 2018.

Center director Stephen Enniss said the project was relevant and pointed out there are "few opportunities for researchers to access digitized archives of contemporary authors."

UT acquired the archive from the writer's family in November 2014 - seven months after his death in Mexico City - for $2.15 million.

In October 2015, the archive was opened up for research and a small selection of digitized documents were made available to the public through the Harry Ransom Center webpage (http://hrc.utexas.edu/garciamarquezdigital)
