The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Türkiye, Hakan Fidan, held a meeting with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araqchi, to analyze the most recent regional developments and the state of negotiations between Tehran and Washington.
Sources from the Turkish Foreign Ministry reported that both diplomats exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East and evaluated the progress of indirect contacts maintained between Iran and the United States, aimed at reaching an agreement that contributes to reducing tensions in the region.
The meeting took place hours after Tehran announced the suspension of its exchange of messages with Washington, a decision attributed to the continuation of Israeli attacks against Lebanese territory.
The measure coincided with a new military escalation in Lebanon, following orders from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his Defense Minister, Israel Katz, to conduct military operations against the southern suburbs of Beirut.
These developments are occurring despite a ceasefire extension in effect until early July and on the eve of a new round of talks between Lebanese and Israeli representatives, scheduled to take place in Washington under U.S. auspices.
Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that negotiations regarding most terms of a potential agreement with Iran were practically concluded, with only a few aspects related to regional security and navigation in the Strait of Hormuz remaining to be defined.
The United States and Israel initiated military operations against Iran on February 28, to which Tehran responded with attacks against Israeli targets and U.S. interests in several Arab countries.
Subsequently, the parties agreed to a temporary ceasefire that entered into force on April 8, although the situation remains marked by episodes of tension and mutual accusations.
