The MiTransfer mobile wallet, a service integrated into the flagship application of the Empressa de Telecomunicaciones de Cuba (ETECSA), has reached the milestone of one million users. After three years of operation, this digital payment tool shows robust growth, reflecting Cuba's steady progress toward the digitalization of its society.
For Lisandra Carralero Mojena, the one-millionth customer, discovering the service was a fortunate coincidence that has proven highly advantageous. Beyond serving as a fast and secure alternative when bank communications fail, Carralero noted that the wallet benefits her young children because she can "create a sort of savings or deposit account for them to use without needing a physical card."
Lisandra registered just four days ago, on Sunday, April 19, after switching from an iPhone to an Android device specifically to facilitate easier payments through Transfermóvil. Upon entering the platform, she began exploring the wallet's capabilities, such as recharging Nauta accounts and making online payments at various service facilities.
"MiTransfer is the opportunity for a customer, whether banked or not, to participate in the Cuban electronic commerce ecosystem," confirmed Julio Antonio García Trápaga, Director of Support and Development of Digital Products and leader of Transfermóvil. "It is the possibility of doing so in a more integral, inclusive, and sustained manner." The executive also announced that additional services will be added to the wallet’s portfolio throughout the year.
During a small ceremony honoring the one-millionth user, García emphasized that reaching this figure demonstrates the widespread adoption of the platform. He explained that today, the wallet processes "around four million operations, which averages nearly 100 operations per minute—a significant volume." He added, "Reaching one million customers is transcendental, and we know we will continue to grow."
Regarding the project's origins, he highlighted that it is a 100% national product. "We have the strength of being one of the few countries in the world with its own mobile wallet," he stated, praising his development team of 25 specialists.
García clarified that MiTransfer should not be viewed in isolation but as a vital component of the broader Transfermóvil ecosystem, which currently handles 70% of all digital payment operations in the country. Looking ahead, he revealed that the platform will introduce new features this year, including a business card service and a new function called "Voto Móvil" (Mobile Vote).
