In a letter addressed to the UN Secretary General and members of the Security Council, Iran warned of serious consequences if the United States decides to attack it.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran has repeatedly declared, at the highest level, that it does not seek tension or war and will not start any war. However, in the event of being subjected to military aggression, Iran will respond decisively and proportionally, in exercise of its inherent right to self-defense, under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter," states the document signed by the country's permanent representative to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani.
Tehran warned that in the event of such an attack, "all bases, installations, and assets of the hostile force in the region would constitute legitimate targets in the context of Iran's defensive response." "The United States would assume full and direct responsibility for any unpredictable and uncontrolled consequences," the letter reads.
Tensions Between the U.S. and Iran
In early January, there was an escalation between Washington and Tehran, following the threat of military intervention launched by President Donald Trump, in a context of internal protests in Iran. Although the demonstrations later ceased, the U.S. maintained pressure, redirecting its argument toward Tehran's nuclear and missile programs.
On February 6, the first day of indirect contacts between the U.S. and Iran on the nuclear issue was held in Muscat, Oman. After the meeting, Trump asserted that "Iran seems very interested in reaching an agreement." For its part, Tehran described the atmosphere as "positive" and confirmed its willingness to keep the dialogue channel open. A new round of talks was scheduled for this Tuesday in Geneva, Switzerland.
At the same time, the Persian nation has repeatedly assured that they are prepared to respond to any U.S. "strategic mistake" with "heavy" blows. Furthermore, they have warned that a complete cessation of uranium enrichment is "absolutely unacceptable" for Iran.
