Tsunami Alert Issued after Huge Quake in Central Chile

The Chilean Navy’s SHOA oceanographic service issued the tsunami alert for the country’s central and southern coast. According to the National Seismological Service of the University of Chile, the quake struck at 7:54 p.m. and had its epicenter located 36 km (22 miles) west of the town of Canela and at a depth of 11 km (7 miles).

SHOA also ordered vessels to sail at least 10 nautical miles from the coast.

At least 10 aftershocks, some of them of magnitude 6 have been felt so far after the powerful quake, which shook the country from Atacama in the north to the Araucania zone, in the south.
