Cuba''s ambassador to Geneva, Anayansi Rodriguez, has expressed support for establishing binding obligations on transnational corporations not only in national legislation but also International Law, diplomatic sources reported.

During a session of the Open-Ended Intergovernmental Working Group under the Human Rights Council, the diplomat stated that such regulations should ensure that activities developed by firms, including the exploitation of natural resources, comply with internationally agreed standards.

The diplomat stressed the need for the principles of universality, indivisibility and interdependence of human rights to be reflected.

This includes the right of men and peoples to participate in an economic, social, cultural and political development in which all fundamental freedoms can be fully carried out.

'We strongly support the process started at the Human Rights Council for the development of a legally binding instrument on this matter,' Rodriguez said.

These regulations should respond to current regulatory gaps, particularly the defenselessness of victims of violations in this field and the necessary compensation, she added.

'Taking into account the growing role of transnational corporations worldwide, it is essential that the new instrument reflects a clear policy on international cooperation and capacity training, (...) to achieve the full implementation of all human rights,' she said.
