Tegucigalpa, Jun 23 (Prensa Latina) More than 29,000 Hondurans have been deported this year by authorities in the United States and Mexico, Foreign Ministry sources in Honduras said today.
The Honduran Deputy Foreign Minister for Consular and Migratory Affairs, Andrea Matamoros, said that to avoid displacement of national citizens to those countries, the authorities were improving the population's living conditions.
According to official figures, around 75,000 Hondurans returned to the territory last year, after being expelled from the United States and Mexico.
Many of these people abandoned their country due to lack of employment and opportunities, as well as violence, according to human rights authorities.
With the purpose of preserving lives, National Migration Institute Director Carolina Mejivar called the authorities to dismantle human-trafficking networks that take sons and daughters from the country abroad.
Honduras sheltered 38,000 migrants from other countries last year, most of whom use Tegucigalpa as a crossing to reach the United States.
