The “CBS This Morning” anchor announced plans for an upcoming interview with Penn. Rose spoke at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena, Calif. on Tuesday where he was welcomed by his co-anchors Gayle King and Norah O’Donnell.
Rose told the room of journalists that he met Penn last night.
“We are planning to do an interview about his experience and what happened to him and I look forward to that, as soon as all the things can be worked out,” Rose said. “We’ll be able to sit down and I have a thousand questions for Sean. It’s a remarkable story.”
Though timing is still up in the air, Rose hopes the interview happens “sooner than later,” he said.
“Yes, I”m definitely doing an interview but at what time, we don’t know yet. When it will happen will depends on when we can agree on terms of a date of when to do it and that obviously has to do with issues that I’m not familiar with in respect to him,” Rose explained. “I’m prepared to do it whenever I get the greenlight from him and his lawyers.”
In respect to Penn, Rose would not detail his Monday night meeting with Penn. “He did ask me to save whatever conversations we had for the interview … so hopefully that will make the interview interesting,” Rose said, adding, “I don’t think he’ll be doing any other interviews until we sit down.”
Rose noted that his long-standing relationship with Penn is what allowed him to meet with the actor, who’s remained relatively quiet since his El Chapo meeting has been splashed in the news.
“He and I have done interviews on the PBS program for 20 years on everything. I hadn’t seen him and I was interested in what happened so I went to talk about that,” Rose said. In regards to the El Chapo meeting and Penn’s experience with the drug lord, Rose teased, “He and I will have the chance to explore a whole range of things.”
Rose’s announcement was confirmed by CBS News on Twitter immediately after his comments at TCA.
