A total of 118 doctors from Cuba have arrived in The Gambia to serve in various health facilities in the country.

The doctors were welcomed at a ceremony held at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH) in Banjul.

Speaking at the ceremony, Health Minister Omar Sey said the doctors will spend three years in The Gambia as per the arrangement with the Cuban health minister.

He said the doctors will be sent to different health centres in the country.

Dr Sey appealed to the Cuban doctors to work within the framework of the community they will be serving and deliver to the best interest of the country.

Lazaro Herrera Martinez, Cuban Ambassador to The Gambia, said the two countries have had "this kind of cooperation for a long time".He called on the new batch of doctors to do their best to maintain the relationship.

Professor MIA Khalil, chief medical director at EFSTH, said The Gambia enjoys a "smooth fraternal relationship" with Cuba.

He called on the doctors to ensure good management of the health centres they will be posted.
