The 27th Italian Culture Week in Cuba continues its program today, featuring the Creative Zones project and concluding with an evening concert by artists from the European nation.
Creative Zones Initiative
The Creative Zones project will take place in the Havana district of Habana del Este, specifically at the Cojímar Heritage House. The event will feature the presentation of the book “Las mil maravillas azules. Un viaje por mar al descubrimiento de Italia”. This children's activity promises a morning filled with adventures, including games and raffles, aimed at promoting reading, imagination, and community bonds.
Evening Concert at the Music Museum
The Italian duo Loccisano-Piccioni will perform a concert at the Museum of Music, located in Old Havana, at 6:00 p.m. local time. According to the event program, the duo celebrates a living tradition, possessing a musical heritage that is constantly being reinvented.
Musical Heritage and Instruments
Their performance features distinctive instruments, central to their sound. The first is the chitarra battente, a string instrument originating from southern Italy. It features ten metal strings arranged in five double courses. The word battente literally means "swinging," though a more precise translation would be "beating," which refers to its playing technique, similar to the strumming of a classical or flamenco guitar.
The second instrument utilized by the Loccisano-Piccioni duo is the frame drum, a type of membranophone where the diameter of the head is greater than its depth. Its frame consists of one or two overlapping wooden hoops and may be equipped with jingles.
With these instruments, the ensemble has consolidated its success, performing a repertoire that celebrates the dialogue between the folklore of Southern Italy and world rhythms.
