Widespread Disapproval for US Military Action Against Venezuela

The idea of a potential US military action in Venezuela generates widespread disapproval here, according to a poll published today amid peak tensions between the two countries.
The survey revealed that three out of four Americans, including just over half of Republicans, state that President Donald Trump would need Congressional approval before undertaking any military operation against the South American nation.
Across party lines, a large majority affirms that the government must explain the United States' intentions regarding any action, as it has not yet done so clearly. This translates to 97 percent of Democrats, 86 percent of independents, and 64 percent of Republicans opining that such an explanation is necessary.
The eventual plan also does not enjoy overwhelming support from Republicans, indicated the poll published this Sunday by CBS News/You Gov.
Only one in five Americans has heard a lot about the US military reinforcement. This could be another expression of the feeling of limited information about its purpose, the analysis added.
Broadly speaking, citizens do not consider Venezuela a significant threat to the United States.
Meanwhile, what Americans hear from the White House about inflation does not match what they truly feel at home: rising prices and a worsening economic situation.
Last month, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham stated that ground attacks in Venezuela are a "real possibility," although recently the president has spoken about the option of eventual talks, which would suppose an open window to diplomacy.
In early September, the United States began a campaign in the Caribbean, extended to the eastern Pacific, against alleged drug trafficking, but, in the opinion of experts, the focus is on Venezuela.
Attacks on vessels have so far left a toll of 83 dead and more than twenty small boats destroyed.
Democratic Senator Rubén Gallego of Arizona warned that the Trump administration's actions in the Caribbean constitute "authorized murder what is being committed."
The entire campaign takes place amid a deployment unprecedented in decades in areas of the Caribbean, where the USS Gerald Ford (CVN-78), the world's largest aircraft carrier, has been stationed. It joins eight other US ships, including three destroyers, a cruiser, three amphibious assault and transport ships, F-35B fighter jets, and some 15,000 personnel.
In this scenario, Trump also ordered the CIA to execute covert operations within Venezuela under the pretext of combating drug cartels. The authorities in Caracas have reiterated that the true purpose is a greater one: to overthrow the democratically elected president, Nicolás Maduro.
