Pope Leo XIV renewed his criticisms on Tuesday of the immigration policies of U.S. President Donald Trump, condemning the "extremely disrespectful" treatment of migrants in the United States.

"We have to find ways to treat people humanely," he stated in English to journalists outside his secondary residence near Rome.

While he acknowledged that "all countries have the right to determine who, how, and when people enter," he noted there were people who "were living a good life, many of them for 10, 15, or 20 years" and were treated in an "extremely disrespectful" manner.

The pontiff asked "all the people of the United States to listen" to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, which in an unusual statement last week urged an end to the "climate of fear."

The Pope, appointed in May, has become an increasingly staunch critic of the Trump administration's policies.
