Head coach Germán Mesa today defended the structure of the Cuban national baseball team set to compete in the Baseball America’s Cup, emphasizing versatility and team cohesion as the cornerstones of his approach.
During a press conference held at the Adolfo Luque Hall of Havana’s Latinoamericano Stadium, the former shortstop explained that the coaching staff prioritized players capable of performing in multiple infield positions—an approach, he said, that aligns with the dynamics of modern baseball.
Mesa noted that the goal is to build an adaptable team able to respond to any situation. He stressed that “versatility, more than a luxury, is a necessity,” as he justified the inclusion of players such as Tailon Sánchez, whose selection sparked broad debate among fans.
The manager highlighted the importance of veterans like Alfredo Despaigne, describing him as a symbol of leadership within the clubhouse. Mesa added that “his experience and example are invaluable, embodying the commitment and passion we want to project.”
Regarding the pitching rotation, Mesa stated that the coaching staff sought to maintain balance between starters and long relievers. “We looked for arms capable of taking on different roles depending on the game’s circumstances; flexibility will be our strength,” he emphasized.
The Cuban squad will compete in Group A of the continental tournament, alongside Mexico, Curaçao, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, and Venezuela. After beginning training camp in Matanzas, the team will travel to Panama for its debut on the 13th.
The 2025 Baseball America’s Cup will bring together twelve nations and serve as a prelude to the World Cup qualifiers, a tournament expected to test not only the talent but also the adaptability of the new generation of Cuban baseball players.
