Under the motto "For the Sustainability of our Coasts," the First Event on Integrated Coastal Zone Management, sponsored by Cuba's Environment Agency and its Center for Environmental Studies and Services (Cesam) in Villa Clara, will bring together from today until October 25th more than 50 participants from different institutions across the country.

Known by the acronym Coastal Center, this 2025 edition of the scientific meeting will be held at the Meliá Tryp Cayo Coco Hotel, located in the northern cay archipelago of the Ciego de Ávila province.

This Cuban tourist destination promotes sustainable tourism, supported by local, national, and international initiatives aimed at the comprehensive protection of the ecosystem.

Master of Science Félix Alexis Correa Álvarez, head of the Climate Change and Risk Management Department at Cesam, told the Cuban News Agency that the event will promote environmental management as a pillar of sustainable economic and social development.

Furthermore, this gathering will encourage the interconnection between science, innovation, and government in territorial decision-making processes.

It will be a conducive space for exchanging experiences and best practices among institutions, communities, and productive sectors, in addition to fostering a responsible environmental culture that contributes to the preservation of natural resources.

Coastal Center is established as an environment for dialogue, cooperation, and learning among researchers, authorities, educators, specialists, entrepreneurs, managers, students, and local actors committed to the protection of coastal ecosystems and sustainable development in Cuba.

Three thematic axes, corresponding to an equal number of commissions, will focus the debates: Biodiversity and Natural Resources, Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation, and Environmental Management, Education, and Communication, as defined by the event's agenda.

Correa Álvarez explained that they will fulfill a comprehensive scientific program, with keynote speeches, presentations, and posters.

Master of Science Yamilé Jiménez Peña, director of the Center for Environmental Engineering and Biodiversity of Ciego de Ávila, stated that her institution will be represented by managers, researchers, and specialists who carry out various tasks to safeguard the marine-coastal ecosystem.

She added that they will also share results of scientific activities aimed at reducing risks and promoting adaptation to climate change, conserving biodiversity, and encouraging sustainable tourism in the Jardines del Rey destination.
