Cuban weightlifter Ludia Montero made her debut today with a sixth-place finish and three national records in the women's 48 kg category at the 2025 World Weightlifting Championships in Forde, Norway.
The digital site of the sports publication JIT highlights that the athlete from Granma province finished fourth in the snatch with a lift of 83 kg, a result that marked her first national record of the evening in the Norwegian city.
In the clean and jerk event, she achieved 100 kilograms—also a record—which earned her a sixth-place finish in that segment. The combined total of both exercises (183 kg) likewise secured her the sixth overall position, establishing a third national record for her country.
The host nation's athlete, Song Gum Ri, was proclaimed the star of the category, securing three world titles and setting two world records. Ri finished with 91 kg in the snatch, 122 kg in the clean and jerk, and a total of 213 kg. The latter two marks were recorded as new global benchmarks.
The podium was completed by India's Chanu Mirabai (84-115-199), who earned the silver medal in the clean and jerk and the total, and the bronze in the snatch. Thailand's Thanyathon Sukcharoen (88-110-198) claimed the silver medal in the snatch and two bronze medals in the clean and jerk and the total.
According to the World Championship schedule, the competition will continue this Friday with medals being contested in the men's 60 kg and women's 53 kg divisions. Cuba will not have a representative in these categories.
The championship will conclude on the 11th, when Cuban lifter Marifelix Sarría (+86 kg), the other representative from the island nation present at the event, will compete.
