Mexico’s Foreign Minister, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, rejected commercial blockades at the United Nations and reaffirmed his country’s stance against the embargo imposed by the United States on Cuba.

“Mexico will always advocate for the peaceful resolution of conflicts, and for that reason, it rejects sanctions and commercial blockades that only harm the well-being of the people and do not build regions of peace or prosperity,” stated the minister.

“Without ambiguity,” he added while speaking at the High-Level Segment of the 80th session of the General Assembly, “we reaffirm our historic position against the blockade on Cuba and our call to remove this country from the list of those that support terrorism.”

The Mexican representative stressed that respecting international law is the safeguard of peace and the antidote to a logic of power that undermines weaker nations.

Quoting Mexico’s “Benemérito de las Américas,” Benito Juárez García, he emphasized: “Everything by reason and law; nothing by force.”

According to the most recent data released by Cuban authorities, the blockade enforced by Washington caused estimated damages of $7.56 billion from March 2024 to this past February.

Presenting the updated report, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez said that figure represents a 49 percent increase compared to the previous period, due to additional tightening measures imposed over the past 12 months.

At current prices, the accumulated damages from more than six decades of blockade amount to $170.67 billion.

When calculated using the value of gold in the international market, to avoid fluctuations in the dollar, the damages caused by this policy—condemned annually by the overwhelming majority of countries at the UN General Assembly—exceed $2 trillion.
