Residents of Santiago gathered today at the site where the Moncada attackers finalized preparations for the July 26, 1953 uprising, celebrating the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Siboney Farm Historical Museum.
Declared a National Monument, the museum is located 14 kilometers east of Santiago de Cuba and preserves the final moments of the vanguard of the Centenary Generation, who, led by Fidel Castro, set out to seize the nation’s second-most important military fortress.
During the ceremony, Suitberto Frutos, Provincial Director of Heritage, commended the work of museum director Alina Leyva, who in turn acknowledged the efforts of previous generations in safeguarding the site’s historical significance and educating new audiences.
Marisleydis Brunet, Deputy Provincial Director of Heritage, urged staff to continue preserving the museum as a symbol of Cuba’s struggle for freedom and a model for maintaining the nation’s historical memory.
Earlier in the day, students from the nearby Perucho Figueredo and Antonio Boisan Barrientos primary schools placed a floral tribute at the monument honoring Abel Santamaría.
The event brought together museum staff, retired employees, local residents, veterans of the Cuban Revolution, and provincial heritage officials.
