Sites to build a new nuclear reactor in Belarus are being evaluated

The director of the Department for the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Alexei Polischuk, informed today that Moscow and Minsk are studying options to locate a new nuclear reactor in Belarus.    

The diplomat told Sputnik news agency on Sunday that experts from both countries are studying two proposals, which could be the construction of an additional third reactor at the Belarusian nuclear power plant in Ostrovets or a new two-reactor plant in the Mogilev region.

Polischuk added that the governments of both nations have set up a working group to discuss at an expert level the technical and financial conditions of such an ambitious project.

Today, Belarus has only one nuclear power plant. Located in the west of the country, near the border with Lithuania, and operational since 2020. This Ostrovéts nuclear power plant has two reactors of 2,400 megawatts each.
