Cuban and Mexican Professionals Exchange Experiences on Nursing

The assimilation of Cuban experiences in caring for newborns, seriously ill patients and the elderly to contribute to better health care in Mexico is the goal of a meeting of nurses taking place in the city of Camaguey.

The 4th Cuba-Mexico International Meeting on Nursing, sponsored by the Carlos J. Finlay University of Medical Sciences of Camagüey to develop skills in the management of that specialty, specifically for master's students in Mexico, will run until Thursday.

Doctor of Sciences Rafael Estevez, Coordinator of the Master’s Course in Perinatal Nursing and Intensive Care at the University Center of Chalco Valley, of the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico (UAEM), noted that in these two areas the Caribbean nation has valuable experiences for their students.

An infant mortality rate similar to that of highly developed states, and an excellent service in intensive care, even with the technological limitations imposed by the U.S. blockade against the country, support the interest of Mexican professionals, commented Professor Estevez.

For her part, Professor Laura Castro of the University of La Salle in Nezahualcoyotl, State of Mexico, expressed the interest of the institution to acquire tools for gerontology care, for a first edition of a master’s degree on the subject.

The experience of the multidisciplinary integration for treating the elderly and the promotion of a good quality of life are our main concerns, specified the professor, who will visit with her students old people’s homes and grandparents clubs in Camagüey.

After Monday’s theoretical sessions, participants visited hospitals, family doctors’ offices and other health care facilities, which they will also do until Thursday, May 21, the last day of the meeting.
