On the occasion of the 95th anniversary of the birth of Yasser Arafat, Cuba remembers the legacy of the father of the nationalist movement for the creation of a Palestinian State.

In a message on the social network X, Roberto Morales Ojeda, member of the Political Bureau and Secretary of Organization of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, reiterated the unwavering solidarity with the cause to which Arafat (1929-2004) dedicated his life: demanding the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.

He also stressed that the undisputed leader of the Palestinian people was a friend of Cuba and of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz.

Arafat advocated dialogue in search of peace with Israel, and participated in a series of negotiations with Tel Aviv to end the conflict, including the Oslo Accords in 1993, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994.

Yasser Arafat was the first president of the Palestinian National Authority, an autonomous administrative organization that has temporarily governed the Gaza Strip and part of the West Bank since 1994.

He died at the age of 74 in France, after weeks of medical treatment.  In 2012, an investigation was opened that confirmed suspicions of poisoning the Palestinian leader.
