Cuban high jumper Ioamnet Quintero, winner of the bronze medal in Barcelona 1992 and world champion in Stuttgart 1993, finished eighth at the World Masters Athletics Championships 2024, held in Gothenburg, Sweden.
“It was a splendid moment. Memories of my best times came back to mind,” Quintero said after jumping 1.35m, her best result in the competition of 50-plus-year-old athletes. “The nerves, what can I say... regardless, I focused and managed to control them. It’s been long since I last competed at international level, and being the first to jump was an additional burden.
“I have a bad taste in my mouth for failing to do better, perhaps because I did not have a better preparation,” she added. “I hope to improve for the next competitions, because I intend to keep participating in this category.”
This is the first time that former Cuban athletes compete in events of this kind, this time with nine athletes registered.
