Colombia exported seven million eggs to Cuba this year, but that destination shows growing potential and this figure is estimated to reach 40 million by the end of 2024, an authorized source said on Friday.

The president of the National Federation of Poultry Farmers of Colombia (FENAVI), Gonzalo Moreno, noted that Cuba has become a natural market for the South American nation, due to its proximity, but also because it can compete with price and quality.

In his speech, which took place at the Corferias fairgrounds in this capital, where the 21st FENAVI Congress was held, Moreno added that although other Caribbean states are being looked to for exports, “Cuba is now the market.”

He commented on the existing capacity to export liquid egg, an operation that is about to be opened for Cuba with a view to industrial processes (pastry).

“A first refrigerated test container will be shipped soon,” he said.

This year’s export target to Cuba is equivalent to almost the same amount that is produced in Colombia in one day, estimated by FENAVI at 50 million units.

The eggs shipped to Cuba are dispatched from the port of Cartagena (north), it was reported.

Cuban Ambassador in Bogota Javier Caamaño said that this excellent news demonstrates the great potential in trade relations between the two nations.

He also praised the upcoming increase in commercial flights between the capitals of the two countries with the beginning, on July 2, of Avianca flights, which will reach 11 weekly frequencies between Bogota and Havana.
