The Cuban Wrestling and Paris 2024
especiales
After the world wrestling championship, which offered 90 seats for the Olympic Games in Paris 2024, 30 in each freestyle, Cuba secured four seats.
The World Champions Luis Orta (67 kg), and Gabriel Rosillo (97 kg), plus the bronze medalist Oscar Pino (130 kg) did so in the Greco -Roman style, and Milaimys Marín (76 kg) won for the women.
Of these, only Pino should not be between August 5-11, 2024 at the Champs de Mars Arena, the same place where the Judo competition is held, because its goal was to guarantee the quota for the multi -champion Mijaín López.
The rest of our representatives in the world championship of Belgrade were quite far from earning their spot for Paris 2024, several of them below the expectations, especially free-style wrestlers.
However, all of them will have two other opportunities to ensure their spot in Paris 2024, where they will compete in total 288 wrestlers (192 men and 96 women), exactly the same amount as in the previous Olympic Games.
The host country will not be assigned any spot for wrestling and each nation can compete with a maximum of 18 athletes, that is, one in each division.
After the world championship, 144 spots will be defined by the continental classification tournaments next year, where each region will organize one, except for Oceania and Africa, which will have a single tournament.
The two best classified athletes in each continental tournament in each of the 18 Olympic weight categories will get a spot for their country, and the last 54 spots will be decided in the World Classifying Tournament.
In the latter case, finalists in each weight will win their spot, and in addition, an extra fight between the bronze medalists will be organized to define the last classified to Paris 2024.
In Cuba’s case, the headquarters and date of that Pan American Contest (it could even be Havana) is still undecided. In this competition the remaining three Greco -Roman wrestlers will have to face the best in the continent, because in those divisions (60, 77, and 87 kg) no athlete in the region ended among the top five in Belgrade.
Free-style wrestlers will have things a little easier, because in five of the six categories they got rid of the best: Puerto Rican Sebastián Rivera in 65 kg and North Americans Kyle Dake, David Taylor, Kyle Snyder and Mason Parris in 74, 86 , 97 and 125 kilos, respectively.
Meanwhile, women will favor because the United States conquered in the Serbian competition three positions for Paris, although one was in the same weight of Milaimys, therefore those taking advantage will be in the 50 and 57 kilos, in addition to 53 kg where the Ecuadorian Lucia Yépez won the spot.
Coaches in each modality must make adjustments, if necessary, to at least repeat with 12 representatives like we had in Tokyo 2020. Back then the free style had three in each sex, and this time I believe that men can win more spots.
