The President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, today led the political act and military ceremony on the occasion of the 118th anniversary of the death of Major General Máximo Gómez.

“With sacred respect and deep admiration, Cuba pays tribute to the Generalissimo,” the President of the Republic added on Twitter.

Likewise, the president of the Caribbean nation recalled on the same social network that the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, described Gómez as the most brilliant leader and teacher of Cuban leaders.

Máximo Gómez was a distinguished internationalist fighter who made a notable contribution to the fight for national independence in the 19th century.

He was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in 1836 and came to Cuba in 1864 to join, four years later, the insurrectionary struggle that began on the Caribbean island against the Spanish metropolis.

He was a general in the Ten Years’ War (1868-1878) and the General in Chief of the Cuban revolutionary troops in the war that began in 1895.

His essential contribution in the course of both liberating feats, his capacity, courage and total dedication to that cause earned him the condition of Generalissimo of the Liberation Army.

A singular monumental complex was erected in this capital to this Dominican hero, located at the beginning of Avenida de las Misiones, very close to the entrance of the Havana tunnel.
