On Friday, Cuba stressed the importance of having a fund, mainly from developed nations, to help poor countries pay the growing costs of livelihood caused by climate
This was the main decision of the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27), held in the Egyptian beach resort of Sharm El Sheikh in November, Cuba’s Representative to United Nations, Pedro Luis Pedroso, told Prensa Latina.
Pedroso, representing the G-77 plus China, participated in the first coordination meeting of the Transitional Committee of the Loss and Damage Fund, held in the southern city of Luxor this week.
We defended at the meeting the unity of the members of this committee, who in turn represent the states of the group,” he stressed.
Our unity was what allowed us to promote the creation of the fund at COP27, the diplomat said and warned on the attempts by wealthy nations to stop the issue.
Developed countries are trying to water down the issue because they are the ones that would have to pay, according to the COP27 requirements and their responsibilities as the main emitters of polluting gases, Pedroso said.
