Pianists from around the world perform in Cuba’s music scene

Havana, May 30 (Prensa Latina) Musicians from China, Egypt, Greece and Russia on Monday will perform the recitals of the 6th Meeting of Young Pianists, which is taking place in this capital until June 10.
According to the Esteban Salas Musical Heritage Office and the Directorate of Cultural Management of the Office of the Historian of Havana, organizers of the event, soloists Guangshou Tian, Wael Farouk, Katia Skanavi and Kirill Gerstein will perform in the coming days.
Under the artistic direction of Salomon Mikowsky, Chinese pianist Guangshou will perform Sergei Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C major, Op. 26, while Egyptian pianist Farouk will play the piece Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 16 by the Ukrainian composer himself.
On the other hand, Greek pianist Skanavi will play Piano Concerto No. 2 in F minor, Op. 21 by Polish composer Frédéric Chopin, while the Russian-American pianist Gerstein will close the recital calendar with Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, Op. 15 by German composer Johannes Brahms.
The event will be held at the Basilica Menor del Convento de San Francisco de Asís and will also feature the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Cuba (Cuba´s National Symphonic Orchestra), conducted by maestro Enrique Perez Mesa.
Conceived a decade ago by Professor Mikowsky and historian Eusebio Leal, this edition of the event will feature seven students from the Manhattan School of Music in the United States, as well as 14 performers from nine nations, who will be the protagonists of 19 concerts with orchestra, recitals and master classes.
The program of performances includes classics of universal piano music, the premiere of works by renowned Cuban composers such as Leo Brouwer and Ernesto Oliva, as well as Iranian composer Inesa Sinkevych and a selection of pieces from the Cuban heritage by Roberto Valera, José María Vitier, among others.
