San Jose, Mar 8 (Prensa Latina) The comprehensive and effective protection of women's rights is a regional challenge, the executive secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Alicia Barcena, said on Tuesday.

Speaking at the commemoration of International Women’s Day, as part of the 5th Forum of Latin American and Caribbean Countries on Sustainable Development, Barcena called for the application of strategic solutions provided by feminism to overcome asymmetries.

She recalled that the structural knots of gender inequality are still present today, expressed in aspects such as the unequal distribution of power, resources, wealth and work, as well as in the way women and men spend their time, as it is well known that women spend three times as many hours as men on unpaid care work.

The ECLAC executive secretary pointed out that we are facing a true change of era that demands, summons and invites to a profound transformation, through the links between the economy, society and the environment, and with greater international cooperation.

“This is a day to renew our commitment to equity, gender equality and women’s autonomy. A day to show, value and recognize women’s contributions to a sustainable future,” she emphasized.
