Cuban Literacy Program Benefits Over Eight Million People

The Cuban literacy program known as “Yes, I Can” has been implemented in 30 nations of the world where eight million people have learned how to read and write with that methodology, said Doctor in Science Cesar Torres, director of the Latin American and Caribbean Pedagogic Institute, which leads that initiative.

Cuba has received mentions and UNESCO King Sejong Prize for its contribution to eliminate illiteracy in the world, the Doctor said who recalled that the program was officially launched on July 1, 2003 in Venezuela.

The South American country declared itself free of illiteracy less than a year after the program was implemented with over one million citizens benefiting from it. At present, the initiative is being implemented in Spanish, Portuguese, English, Quechua, Aymara, Creole, Swahili and other languages.
