The National Association for Innovation and Rationalization (ANIR) has rescued 48 artificial kidneys used in hemodialysis services at several hospitals in Eastern Cuba.

The initiative, fruit of the talent of young David Guzman – a specialist of the Provincial Electro-medicine Center of Las Tunas-, allowed saving more than half a million dollars to the national economy in 2013.

Guzman told the Cuban News Agency that these actions have enabled improving patient care in the municipalities of Baracoa, Mayarí, Santiago de Cuba, Nuevitas, Puerto Padre and Las Tunas.

He pointed out that if they had not recovered this equipment it would had been necessary to spend some 17,000 dollars to purchase them on the international market.

The ANIR is currently working to strengthen the participation of its members in finding solutions and initiatives that boost the production, import substitution and savings.

The organization expects to hold its first National Conference next October, in which they will discuss monetary compensation for their inventions, the issue of copyright certificates and the insufficient attention to their activities by the administrations.

Data provided by the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI) indicates that ANIR members contributed over 757 million pesos for its work last year.
