Cuba Defends at UN a Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration

In his speech, the representative of the Caribbean nation, Pablo Berti Oliva, stated that 'the governance of migration is not a matter of closing the borders and preventing the entry of people, but of regulating mobility by opening accessible, regular, safe and affordable migration channels and promoting and celebrating diversity.'

In this regard, he agreed with the criteria expressed by the Special Rapporteur on migration and considered it necessary to analyze with States the proposal to develop a 2035 agenda to facilitate human mobility within the framework of the United Nations, in parallel to 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

'This analysis should be aimed at assessing its feasibility in the face of ongoing negotiations for the adoption of the global pact for safe, orderly and regular migration,' he said.

Berti Oliva also spoke in the Working Group on the issue of human rights and transnational corporations.

The diplomat considered the proposals 'to provide mechanisms to ensure that companies responsible for having committed classic violations of human rights and international crimes are investigated and prosecuted for the cross-border damages caused.'

He also mentioned the possibility of coordinating and strengthening 'these national efforts to create an international framework of protection that will allow the consolidation of mechanisms to protect victims against such violations and ensure reparation.'

Cuba has a broad participation in the various activities of the 35th session of the Human Rights Council, which began on June 6 and runs until the 23rd.
