Cuba Ties with Poland in World Chess Olympiad

The Cuban chess male team competing in the 3rd round of the World Chess Olympiad being held in Norway tied 2-2 to Poland Monday.

Cuban Grand Master (GM) Leinier Domínguez, the owner of an ELO average of 2, 760 points, drew with GM Radoslaw Wojtaszek in 42 movements of a Neo Gruenfeld Defense.

Meanwhile, another Cuban GM, Lázaro Bruzón (2,664 ELO points) tied to Jan Krzysztof Duda in 32 movements of a Slavic Defense, Yuniesky Quesada (2,644) tied to Mateusz Bartel in 41 of a Bogo Indian Defense, Gruenfeld Variant and Isam Ortiz (2,603) drew with Bartosz Socko in a Petrov Defense.

With this the result Cuban totals 10 points and is expecting for the rest of the matches.

In the female competition the Cuban team will play against Croatia.

INDIA HOLD ITALY

India was lucky to hold Italy to a 2-2 draw in the third round of the Chess Olympiad at Tromso, Norway, on Monday. In the women’s section, fifth seed India hit back through Padmini Rout on the fourth board against 17th seed Kazakhstan to make it 2-2.

On a day when fancied Armenia and USA lost to France and the Netherlands, India struggled in both sections. Parimarjan Negi’s defeat to World No. 3 Fabiano Caruana levelled the match score after S.P. Sethuraman rallied to win. After B. Adhiban drew on the fourth board, Sasikiran pressed hard for win against Daniele Vocaturo, but in vain.

The women, too, struggled all the way against Kazakhstan. The loss of Eesha Karavade on the third board pushed India on the backfoot after draws on the top two boards. But young Padmini’s late victory gave India a vital match-point.
