A memorandum of understanding on the protection of marine waters, coral reefs and environmental education was signed here by specialists from Cuba''s National Aquarium and Research Institute for Studies of the Gulf of Mexico (Harte).

The signatories Wednesday evening were, Maria of los Angeles Serrano, Director of the Havana scientific institution; and Larry McKinney, director of Harte, published today by the Cuban news agency.

With this agreement, stresses the document, they will contribute to a greater cooperation in ecological matters, cultural, of environmental conservation, educational, and scientific research after several years of bilateral links.

For McKinney, Cuba has a very important role in protecting the integrity of the ecological of the Gulf of Mexico because all the movement of tides and water come to its shores.

Serrano said that with this signature is begins a process of studies of the concerned biodiversity, even from Cuba, considered the key of the Gulf.

The official explained that the memorandum opens a door for all them institutions that of a form u another study the sea, and particularizó that also will contribute to strengthen the center of studies of the biodiversity Marina, that is running in the aquarium with views to its development scientific.

The president of Cuban environmental agency, belonging to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (Citma), Maritza García, said that for scientists biodiversity has no boundaries, from there the need to work together on this issue.

We need that our seas are well managed, because we are facing a climate that may have large effects and knowledge is required to avoid losing values of that ecosystem.

The Harte Reserach Institute Harte (HRI, for its acronym in English) for studies of the Gulf of Mexico, from the University Texas A & M at Corpus Christi, is one of the leading scientific centers of the USA, which closely monitors the pollution in that area.
