Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Friday highlighted the transcendence of the Henry Reeve medical contingent specialized in situations of disasters and serious epidemics, 15 years after its creation.

On his Twitter account, the president evoked a statement by the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, at a meeting with the health professionals who would assist the people of the United States after Hurricane Katrina, on September 4, 2005, when the contingent was founded.

'The Henry Reeve Brigade has been created, and whatever the tasks you will assume in any corner of the world or in our own homeland, you will always take the glory of the brave and dignified response that you have given to the solidarity call with the brother people,' Diaz-Canel quoted.

During these 15 years, the Henry Reeve contingent has been part of the international efforts to increase cooperation in the field of health care among the nations, providing assistance, until August 10, 2020, to 45 countries and five non-autonomous territories, according to the Cuban Foreign Ministry.

During this time, more than 9,000 collaborators have provided medical care to approximately four million people and have saved more than 89,000 lives.

In light of the Covid-19 emergency, the medical brigades were immediately mobilized to help other peoples, and in five months only, their presence has reached 38 States.

The efforts of more than 3,700 medical experts, 61.2% of whom are women, are present in the care provided to 355,785 people and 9,736 lives.
