Dhaka, 5 Sep (Prensa Latina) At least 12 people were reportedly killed and another 40 injured after an explosion at a mosque in Bangladesh on Saturday.

The blast took place in an air conditioning unit at the Baitus Salat Jam-e Mosque in the city of Narayanganj, near Dhaka. It was reported that other air conditioners also caught fire.

All the injured were taken to hospitals and several are in critical condition after suffering severe burns. In the meantime, the police initiated the investigation of the case.

Dr. Samanta Lal Sen, coordinator of the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burns and Plastic Surgery, told The Daily Star newspaper that 12 people have perished from the incident so far.

Firefighters suspect that gas accumulated from a leaking pipe caused a fire that triggered the explosion of the air conditioning, causing burns to about 50 worshippers.
