General director for the United States of the Cuban Foreign Ministry, Carlos Fernández de Cossío, affirmed the eve the island will not yield to the threats of Washington, which he described as gangster methods.

After the announcement by the State Department of suspending for two weeks the total application of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act, the official warned the US government appeals to extortion.

It does so under the assumption that 'Cuba fears deadlines or ultimatums. It is time to repeal that monster that hurts millions and does not benefit anyone,' he wrote in his Twitter account.

Enacted on 1996, the Helms-Burton codifies the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed on the island almost 60 years ago.

Title III is an expression of the extraterritorial nature of this law, in seeking to discourage foreign investment on the island, with the aim to economically suffocate as a way to achieve regime change.

Because of the rejection it generates, even in countries allied with the United States, and because of the complexity of its application in northern courts, the presidents had suspended it year after year, for six months.

However, Donald Trump, after doing so in 2017 and 2018, decided last January to suspend the total application for only 45 days.

In March, the State Department did the same for 30 days, although allowing some claims, and on Wednesday announced another two weeks' suspension.

Earlier, Cuba's foreign minister, Bruno Rodríguez, had rejected Washington's position.
